The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has levied a total of $3,800 in fines against a state resident who violated asbestos handling laws during a demolition project at a single-wide mobile home in Jefferson. The mobile home contained asbestos that was improperly handled, and Department of Environmental Quality officials argue that the project likely released asbestos fibers into the air. Airborne asbestos fibers can cause serious health problems if they are unknowingly inhaled or ingested. Asbestos exposure has been conclusively linked to the development of mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer. Mesothelioma affects less than 3,000 Americans each year, and the disease typically lies dormant for up to fifty years before an individual begins to suffer from mesothelioma symptoms. Sadly, the cancer often kills patients within 24 months of being diagnosed. The demolition project at the heart of the matter occurred in 2009 at 759 North Sunrise Drive in Jefferson. The property is owned by Delta Management Co., who hired Jefferson resident Robert Floyd Davis to demolish the mobile home. However, Davis did not have an asbestos abatement license, making it illegal for him to deal with asbestos waste. All told, Davis removed a total of 20 square feet of roofing material coated in asbestos-laden silver paint. According to the US EPA, “Asbestos is a mineral fiber that has been used commonly in a variety of building construction materials for insulation and as a fire-retardant. Because of its fiber strength and heat resistant properties, asbestos has been used for a wide range of manufactured goods.” The EPA has implemented several asbestos usage laws pertaining to the manufacturing, use, removal and disposal of asbestos products. In a success story involving a rare type of cancer, a man from Grand Rapids, Michigan has survived two years after being diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma thanks to a developing chemotherapy option known as heated chemotherapy. The treatment is referred to as HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy). In regards to malignant mesothelioma, only peritoneal mesothelioma patients are candidates for the treatment. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. This type of cancer can take decades to develop and is often misdiagnosed as other, less serious conditions. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which is a less common form of the cancer, develops in the lining of the abdomen. Jesse Diaz was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma in June 2007 and was later referred to Spectrum Health Hospital surgical oncologist Dr. Mathew Chung. Diaz said of his cancer pain, “It was pretty painful. I had pain on one side of my stomach and then it stopped and it started on the other side.” In reference to previous patients with mesothelioma, Dr. Chung said, “Historically we just did surgery if we could do it. It’s a very morbid procedure with not a good outcome.” Dr. Chung has been working with the heated chemotherapy method and Mr. Diaz qualified for the treatment when he was diagnosed. According to Dr. Chung, “We call it the ’shake and bake procedure’ because we would remove everything, put some heated chemotherapy in the abdomen and literally shake the patients so the chemotherapy would circulate in the abdomen.” This developing technique has made great strides for mesothelioma treatment in recent years. Dr. Chung says, “These patients have a 5-year survival rate of less than 25 percent. With this technique, up to 75 percent survive after five years.” The average prognosis for mesothelioma patients is between four and 18 months, but Mr. Diaz has been cancer free two years. Considering this type of cancer is difficult to send into remission, this could be a breakthrough treatment option that may lead to other significant discoveries. Additional information about mesothelioma may be found through the Mesothelioma Center. A Facebook event called the Online Kill-A-Cancer-Cell-athon invites 100,000 people worldwide to eat a trio of anticancer foods on Sunday, April 18th in an effort to kill one million cancer cells – and there are already close to 600 attendees. Inspired by the book Anticancer: A New Way of Life by cancer survivor and physician Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, the Online Kill-A-Cancer-Cell-athon encourages people to adopt an anticancer lifestyle that includes eating specific foods like raspberries, spinach, and cabbage. A full list of anticancer foods can be found on the book’s website, www.anticancerbook.com. The book details scientific research that suggests that all humans have cancer cells inside their bodies, but not all of us will develop cancer, even those who may be exposed to certain carcinogens, such as asbestos. By living an anticancer lifestyle, Dr. Servan-Schreiber believes that a person can dramatically reduce their likelihood of developing cancer. For those suffering from various types of cancer, including mesothelioma, an anticancer lifestyle can support an increased survival rate. Dr. Servan-Schreiber himself is an example – he has survived brain cancer and been in remission for almost twenty years. For those who wish to participate and are considering adopting an anticancer lifestyle, but are not big fans of vegetables, there’s good news: dark chocolate that is at least 70% cacao and green tea are also on the list of acceptable foods. To participate, click the link to the Facebook event page above, or search for “Online Kill-A-Cancer-Cell-athon” in the Facebook search bar. Members of the online social network are also asked to spread the word about the upcoming event via their Twitter account by posting the following: #KillCancer #Anticancer http://bit.ly/9dfcYK.
Author: Robert Levin The dangers of exposure to asbestos dust in the tens of thousands of sufferers of mesothelioma, asbestosis, illness and suffering documented. For many years, unsuspecting owners and workers worked and lived around free, with no friable asbestos without any knowledge of dangerous and often fatal injury, could make breathing even in relatively small quantities of asbestos dust. A frequently asked question, then, among the many who believe that it is at least a little 'exposure to asbestos dust asbestos much hurt, or worse, cancer? The first thing to know about exposure to asbestos that the negative effects of this exposure have a long latency period. It is not uncommon for someone exposed to asbestos, mesothelioma does not develop for 25-40 years after exposure. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that the mesothelium, a protective coating that most of the protective institutions that cover the body in question. Asbestos fibers that are inhaled are made shoes to the lung and eventually lead to the fact that the cells mutate and become cancerous. Approximately 70-80% of mesothelioma cases are estimated to be caused in several stages of asbestos. The amount of exposure that caused disease in people under discussion. While there are many cases of factory or other workers, the heavy burden of traffic, exposure of cracking for many years are to develop the disease, there are also cases where the exposure was very short, like many months or even a few weeks ago. The intensity of exposure is probably relevant as ever. If you think you have been exposed to asbestos dust, it's a good idea to write, as you remember as being too long, where and intensity, have been exposed as you. Often, asbestos litigation can be pursued if you can prove that you worked in a sector or to work or live in an environment in which it was exposed to friable asbestos, that were interested. One reason is so important to document as much as possible the amount of asbestos that may have been because the mesothelioma disease is notoriously difficult to detect and often confused with other types of cancer. It is important to get the first signs of asbestos disease, and early treatment and then realize that uniquely identify the source of controversy. The two main types of mesothelioma) are pleural (chest) and peritoneal (abdomen. collect, pleural, in the lungs pleural membranes thicken a liquid. Both lead to the contraction of the lungs and difficulty breathing with difficulty. Peritoneal occur in similar symptoms, but the abdomen leads to accumulation of fluid and pain in the area. It is not known how many people died of mesothelioma, which was misdiagnosed with another type of cancer. It is therefore important to educate themselves about the differences and causes of all.
